To celebrate 1000 followers, I have decided to host this giveaway. But first, a few words to thank you all.

When I started this blog on the 22nd of February, it was more of an experiment. I wanted to use it to have something that is mine, to do something that I like. Followers were never my concern and to be honest, if I would have reached 100 that would have been an amazing achievement for me. The first 100 came and after that, the number grew and grew and here we are today, at an amazing 1000 followers. My first post was titled “A New Journey” and boy, what a journey it has been. I know these two words sound so soulless by now, after being said so many times, but THANK YOU. To each and every one of you, who have been with me on this journey. I…

Now, back to the giveaway. To host this giveaway I will be using Book Depository. I will, however, make things a bit more interesting. Instead of offering just one book that you all compete for, I will be offering three different books, and the winner will be able to choose ONE of the three. I want to do this because I do not want to force people to read something they do not like. Or rather, people will not even apply for this giveaway, if they do not like the book, and because I would like as many people as possible to participate, I think this is the best way to do it.

This giveaway is not sponsored by Book Depository or WordPress!

That being said, here are the three books you get to choose from:

It by Stephen King

It

‘They float…and when you’re down here with me, you’ll float, too.’To the children, the town was their whole world. To the adults, knowing better, Derry Maine was just their home town: familiar, well-ordered for the most part. A good place to live.It is the children who see – and feel – what makes the small town of Derry so horribly different. In the storm drains, in the sewers, IT lurks, taking on the shape of every nightmare, each one’s deepest dread. Sometimes IT reaches up, seizing, tearing, killing . . .Time passes and the children grow up, move away and forget. Until they are called back, once more to confront IT as IT stirs and coils in the sullen depths of their memories, reaching up again to make their past nightmares a terrible present reality.

When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi

When Breath Becomes Air

At the age of thirty-six, on the verge of completing a decade’s training as a neurosurgeon, Paul Kalanithi was diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer. One day he was a doctor treating the dying, the next he was a patient struggling to live. When Breath Becomes Air chronicles Kalanithi’s transformation from a medical student asking what makes a virtuous and meaningful life into a neurosurgeon working in the core of human identity – the brain – and finally into a patient and a new father. What makes life worth living in the face of death? What do you do when when life is catastrophically interrupted? What does it mean to have a child as your own life fades away? Paul Kalanithi died while working on this profoundly moving book, yet his words live on as a guide to us all. When Breath Becomes Air is a life-affirming reflection on facing our mortality and on the relationship between doctor and patient, from a gifted writer who became both.

Milk and Honey by Rupi Kaur

Milk and Honey

Milk and Honey is a collection of poetry and prose about survival. About the experience of violence, abuse, love, loss, and femininity. The book is divided into four chapters, and each chapter serves a different purpose. Deals with a different pain. Heals a different heartache. Milk and Honey takes readers through a journey of the most bitter moments in life and finds sweetness in them because there is sweetness everywhere if you are just willing to look.

As with every giveaway, there are a few rules:

  1. Make sure that Book Depository ships to your country!
  2. Share this post, so others have a chance to participate (the shared post has to be on your blog until the end of the giveaway).
  3. Leave a comment, stating which book out of the three you would like to read. The comment has to be under this post. Nowhere else!

The winner will be announced on 21st of October, 2017 at 12:00 UTC+2. The decision will be made by a random number or name (depends on how many participants there will be) shuffle. Video proof will be posted.

After the winner has been announced, they will have a week to email me their personal information. If they do not, another winner will be chosen.

Following my blog is not necessary! I do not want to have new followers just because of the giveaway, and have them have zero interest in my content.

Now, because I want this to be fair, considering the statement above, I have decided that everyone that has been a follower from 1-1000, will get two entries. This means, you have a higher chance of winning. I think this is fair, as I would not have reached so many followers without you clicking that button, and I want to give you a slightly higher chance of winning. That is the least I can do.

This is not all!

I will also choose another person (from all of you who will be competing) that is going to win a handmade bookmark from CrochetByRine. The bookmark color will be random, because what her shop has to offer might change in the meantime.

Good luck to everyone!

Gibberish #23

Guess who’s back? I know you have missed me. And oh boy, do I have a story to tell.

I could easily say that I turned my tablet into a reading device, post a couple of pictures and be done with it. But why do that, when I can complain about it like a wimp in 700 words? As you know, bad luck seems to follow me no matter how much I try to avoid it, so, as you would expect, this time was no different. Sit down, strap yourself in and enjoy.

A couple of days ago a thought struck my mind. I went through my closet and pulled out a tablet I bought like at least 5 years ago. So, it is old. It is a no name brand. It is called MPman (too bad it is not called MVP, for fucks sake) and I have struggled with it in the past. It got very slow after a couple of months and the battery drain was immense. So that is the reason why I completely forgot that I still own it.

Since I have had enough of reading off from my phone, I decided to give my tablet another go. Since the warranty was way overdue anyway, I decided to root it. The reason being that although it is running Android 4.0, it did not have Google Play Store on it. It had an app called GetJar, which sucked like all the hookers in Amsterdam. Finding water in the Sahara desert is easier than finding a good app in that store. Carrying on – so I rooted the tablet, and managed to install the Play Store on it. I know it sounds simple, but it was far from that. I probably spent a couple of hours just to root the tablet, because it paused a couple of times, displayed errors and whatnot. It was a real nightmare. But, it did not stop there. Why would it? As mentioned before, the tablet is very slow, so it took me at least another two hours to get everything I want on it. And that “everything” is basically Kindle, Moon+ Reader and Gmail.

Now, I am fine with it being slow, the reason being is the fact that I will use it only for reading, anyway. And when I tested it, the time it takes to turn the page is probably less than a second. Which is okay, I am not going to cut my wrists over that. The battery drain, however, is catastrophic. I switched it on today (Sunday), to test it and it was sitting at 60%. When I put the brightness of the screen to maximum and just let it sit there, it lost 10% in 5 minutes. I shit you not. 10% in 5 minutes. Imagine you are stuck in a life or death situation. You need some light to find your way out of a collapsing building. Well mate, rest in peace. This thing will probably just display a massive middle finger and shut down as soon as you need it.

I tried fixing this, of course, before I even rooted it. I though that maybe there are some apps running in the background, so I just went for the hard reset, so it removes everything. Now, being the massive fucking retard that I am, I managed to stick the paper clip into the wrong fucking hole.

You see how awfully similar these two are?

cof

Let us check what is written above each hole.

cof

Now, take a wild fucking guess in which hole I was sticking it in (pun intended).

It is a good thing I am not using this tablet to answer phone calls from the two and a half friends that I have, because I probably destroyed that microphone like the faculty destroyed my hopes and dreams.

I believe that 4.0 is too much for the tablet to handle. I thought about getting an earlier Android version on it, but guess what, you cannot! Before anyone says it, yes I searched Cyanogenmod, but to no avail. There is no mod available, to turn this piece of junk into gold.

I still have some tricks up my sleeve, so I will be trying those out, and I will keep you updated on the progress.

See you next week, if this thing does not decide to blow up in my face.
